Bluffer Sanctuary

Bluffer Sanctuary comprises 5,800 acres located in northern T8R11 WELS, Maine.  The purpose of the Sanctuary is to protect wetlands, streams, ponds, and forested uplands along the Allagash-Aroostook divide adjacent to TNC’s Big Reed Forest Reserve, to provide sanctuary for its native plants and animals, and to ensure continued public access for compatible, low-impact recreational and educational use. The Sanctuary encompasses:

  • An excellent example of a remote, northern forested glacial landscape and its associated natural communities found at intermediate elevations in the Saint John Uplands biophysical region of Maine;
  • A rich assortment of upland, wetland, and aquatic habitats with over 14 miles of brooks and streams, and 4 ponds larger than 10 acres in size including 40-acre Bluffer Pond;
  • Numerous ridges and small hills rising to about 1,800 feet, featuring outcrops of basaltic rocks of the Bluffer Pond formation which erupted from volcanoes during the Taconic orogeny about 450 million years ago;
  • Exemplary examples of northern white cedar swamps and seepage forests with enriched substrates, home to several rare or unusual orchid species.

As a matter of policy, motor vehicles are permitted only on main access roads. Snowmobiles and off-road vehicles are not permitted in the Sanctuary, except for strictly-limited administrative purposes.  Since the property is a wildlife sanctuary, public access is not permitted for hunting or trapping.
